Ruta 23 in Muel is a no-frills bar & grill combined with a gas station, making it a practical stop for travelers and locals alike along the A23. Its main draw is accessibility and a lively, informal atmosphere rather than refined dining. The indoor space can get quite noisy, especially during busy hours, but there's an outdoor seating area that offers a bit more breathing room and a chance to enjoy some fresh air.

This spot serves up a variety of hearty, traditional Spanish dishes with a focus on tapas and grilled meats. Menu highlights include classics like Entrecote de Ternera a la Plancha, Huevos Fritos con Longaniza y Patatas, and Paella, catering to those after a filling meal. Portion sizes, such as the sizeable bocadillos and combined plates, tend to be generous, appealing particularly to truck drivers, camper van travelers, and anyone looking for a substantial, budget-friendly meal. Prices are notably affordable, which explains the steady stream of local and long-distance visitors.

Aside from the food, the practical benefits are clear: it’s open 24 hours, has clean restrooms—a relief for roadtrippers—and a decent shop attached for quick snacks or essentials. While it lacks showers, the spacious grounds provide a good spot for dog owners to stretch their pets’ legs. Staff are known to be quick and accommodating, with enough English spoken to help tourists feel at ease.

Best for:

  • Travelers needing a combined fuel and food stop with quick service
  • People passing through on the A23 who want reliable, no-nonsense Spanish comfort food
  • Those traveling with dogs who appreciate outdoor space to move around

Atmosphere and timing: Expect a steady hum of activity, especially from lorry drivers and early risers grabbing coffee or a hearty breakfast. If you prefer a quieter experience, the outdoor terrace during off-peak hours is a better bet. The place feels safe and well-trafficked, a reassuring pause on a long drive rather than a spot for lingering late into the night.

Some great food at this 24 hour truck stop as well as clean toilets and a decent shop/fuel stop. We stayed the night in our camper van and had a peaceful night's sleep. It felt very safe. The only thing lacking is showers.

The burger was genuinely delicious, and the ruta 23 bocadia was huge and tasty. It was very loud in the indoor area but there's an outside area too.

Good food place at a petrol station. They speak English and are super fast and have lots of seating. It’s a busy place and a great stop on a23.
